Nisha Patel biography
Born in Leicester, in 1979, British-Indian Kajal Nisha Patel left her profession as an Environmental Project Officer, in 2005. She had been organising eco-funerals for three years, meanwhile building interest about her ancestral heritage and culture. She began to question cultural practices surrounding death in the West, compared to spiritual philosophical practice in the East, thus embarking on her introspective professional journey thereafter. Her interest in Photography began in 2005, after a family trip to India. Due to her undeterred purpose, a tenacious Kajal rapidly nurtured her photographic skills, which ultimately lead her back to India in 2006. Her interest in humanitarian work introduced her to globally reputed charitable organisation, Indicorps, whose principal initiative was to work towards grassroots social progress.

Kajal quickly adjusted to her assignment, a placement within a large slum community in Ahmedabad, and became acquainted with women and young children, thus acquiring international respect for her compassionate approach. Kajal began to document the lives of illiterate women who supported their families by collecting and selling recyclable waste. She studied her subjects, as they interact with their children and environment. Beneath the surface of her truthful and somewhat distressing depictions, lies a captivating energy and optimism as her subjects are revealed with profound probity.

Shortly after embarking on Photography in 2006 before her second trip to India, Kajal was commissioned to record Singaporean street life, by The Singapore Tourism Board, resulting in her work being published and distributed worldwide. Her work has also appeared in The Daily Telegraph Sunday Supplement whilst receiving attention from internationally distributed Indian Newspapers for her work on rag-pickers.

Having received almost no Photographic training, in July 2008, Kajal's talent was recognised by Magnum Photos, when she was selected to build a body of work focusing on the topical regeneration of East London in sight of the 2012 Olympics. Kajal's work has been displayed in solo exhibitions nationally and internationally, where she has also delivered photography workshops and encouraged discussion regarding participant's work and her own. Supported by Magnum Photos and Calumet - London, her work has also been shown in a group exhibition, resulting in a published article in the British Journal of Photography.

Kajal's currently works as a Freelance Photographer, whilst also working on outreach projects. within schools and community centres.
